How does cocaine work?

The neurotransmitter involved in a cocaine experience is dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical that is associated with pleasurable feelings.  Cocaine has its effect by blocking the ‘reuptake’ of dopamine, meaning that the neurotransmitter stays in contact with the receptors longer, prolonging the pleasurable feeling.
